Ethical Breeder Check List

Ragdolls are an extremely popular breed due to their friendly and social behavior, they are a perfect fit for almost any home. This leads to many backyard breeders, kitten mills, and scammers.

As a small preservation hobby breeder, we only have a few litters a year with limited kitten availability. Please reach out if you would like my help verifying any breeder you choose. I can also provide you with breeder recommendations, I’m happy to help so you can support ethical breeders that are preserving the breed!

Ethical Ragdoll Breeder Checklist

  1. Does this breeder at minimum DNA test for HCM and PKD, and can provide copies of testing when requested? Extra points for additional genetic testing and/or echos.
  2. Does this breeder early spay and neuter before kittens go home, and it’s included in their pricing?
  3. Does this breeder show? Have they shown in the last 2-3 years? (You can check this on TICA breeder listings, great way to weed out all those listed that don’t have any last show date)
  4. Does this breeder provide, at minimum, 2 FVRCP vaccinations before kitten goes home?
  5. Does this breeder only allow kittens to leave after 12+ Weeks of age?
  6. Does this breeder have photos, full registered name, and parentage listed for each of their breeding cats?
  7. Does this breeder include a Health Guarantee and provide lifelong support?
  8. Does this breeder require this cat/kitten to be returned to them if there is any reason for rehoming, or offer support to help with placement?
  9. Does this breeder interview potential kitten families and ensure they will be indoor only, and not allow declawing?
  10. Does this breeder provide a 3-5 generation pedigree if requested for both parents so you can confirm there is no inbreeding? (Pawpeds is great to check these, and all breeders should start using this website to check COI)
